In 5th grade my school took a visit to Williamsburg to see the historic colony. As I was there I learned that it was the capital of the Virginia colony. I also learned that they were still discovering different buildings and landmarks. I learned all the jobs the people who lived there did. What they did with their soldiers and where they stored the equipment and how they created their houses and everything they had in their town. It also is the worlds largest living history museum. They take you on a tour of all the habituated land to all the buildings. Which include houses, taverns, storage buildings for weapons and ammunition and much more. I really enjoyed learning about all the people from Colonial Williamsburg and how they lived and what they did. And how they survived knowing all the hardships they faced and how they over came them to create the country we live in now. It’s also so interesting to see how much things have changed from when they were building with less technology then we have now but were able to accomplish so much. They created a whole country with nothing like the technology we have now. Which shows how smart they had to be to work and create with the little they had.I liked meeting the people that live and work there and what they do and how they reenact what living there was like. Also getting to see the archeologist work and find buildings and artifacts was another thing I enjoyed. I appreciated all the work that has gone into Colonial Williamsburg to preserve it and keep it to where people can visit and explore one of the oldest settlements. And learn about our countries history and learn what we came from. Sites like this are significant because it helps people learn what our history is like. Teaches us how we got here. How Americans use to live and what they did for work and how they survived.

The Battle of Fredericksburg is very interesting to me because I like looking back at the history of wars and being in the place where a major war happened is very interesting to me. I like the battle of Fredericksburg because of how big of a battle it was and how it happened right here where we are now living. I think it’s also important to learn about the rich history of where we currently live and what went on and how they started to where it’s now. The topic was selected in class because it is a huge part of Fredericksburg’s history and what went on in the early days of Fredericksburg. Our class goes back in time to look at the history of Fredericksburg and everything that went on from the beginning. It is part of why Fredericksburg grew into the big place it is today because of all the rich history that took place that most people in some states never had. So not only can you live here but you can also learn so much about the early days of it. The battle had the most soldiers of any civil war battle. It was one of the deadliest battles to take place and also one of the largest battles to be fought during the civil war. It was the first time a battle had taken place in a urban area of land and the first time the military’s fought across the river. This expands from not just Fredericksburg’s history but also the entirety of the United States because it was a large and key battle in the civil war fight between the Union and the south. It was one of the earliest battles and one of the biggest wins for the south and General Robert E. Lee. I would like to know more about the people that were fighting and what they did and how they fought. Also, what they would use and how they used it. Like what weapons they had, what they did to get an advantage over the other side, how they used the river and the buildings around and the whole area around where they were fighting. Another thing would be the strategies between the generals from the South and the North to know how they prepared and what they would think about when they were going to war.

My research topic is the battle of Fredericksburg. Some of the key points I looked up were things like what are the causes of the war. What started it and why was it fought here. How were the strategies used back then. Are they similar to what they use now or different. How did it become one of the largest battles to ever take place in the civil war. Some of the answers I found were that it was one of the largest battles to take place in the civil war because the union had around 123,000 soldiers and the confederates had around 80,000 soldiers. The union suffered 12,500 deaths while the confederates suffered only around 6,000. Which boosted the morale of the confederates, giving them hope to win the war while deflating the union’s morale after losing such a big battle. Which led to the removal of the union general Burnside and made Josphe Hooker the new union general. This battle was also the first time a battle had ever gone into an urban part of land where people were living and such. It also was the first battle that involved a river crossing with the union having to cross to try and sneak past towards Richmond. The strategy general Burnside used was he wanted to try to sneak through the Rappahannock river and past Fredericksburg to make it to Richmond which was the capital of the confederate at the time. The replacement of general Burneside ended up being the best move the union could do after the battle because once general Jospeh Hooker came in the immediately started to draw up plans to reach Richmond and take down the confederate capital. Which he was successful at doing. All in all, being able to talk about all these topics will help me create multiple points to create in the final document. It will help me to talk about all different parts of the battle including what happened before, after and during. It will help me to identify key parts of the battle that took place. Also, it will help me to explain in detail and depth about the entirety of the battle itself.
