Native American or American Indian history runs deep in Fredericksburg. There were three different Native American tribes that were settled in Fredericksburg. They were the Sioux, Cherokee and the Iroquois. They were the first people settled on the land in Fredericksburg. That is until the European settlers showed up. The Native Americans saw Fredericksburg as their home while when tourist come they see it as a city built from the ground up. Tourists see Fredericksburg as a large historical site that dealt mostly with the civil war battle of Fredericksburg. And little to do with the Native Americans. You can find some Native American historical markers around if you look closely. A lot are on the Rappahannock river. There is a rock with carvings on it with symbols and a hole shaped almost like a bowl that is called the Indian punch bowl. Scholars and viewers should look at different perspectives because history is usually written by the people that ended up winning something like a war or a fight. So getting one side of the story might not mean you end up getting the full story of what actually happened. Especially scholars because they are supposed to look over every little piece of evidence there is so they can figure out exactly what happened. The viewers should as well so they can find out the whole story of the part of history they are looking at and what not only the top or bottom people went through but all the people that were on the outside that nobody had heard from. Communities should look at all parts of local history to know what happened on the land they live in. The city they live in especially a city like Fredericksburg that is so rich in history. That can tell so many stories to people about learning about the Native Americans that were the first people here and what they did and had to end up going through when the Europeans showed up. And slowly started to take away their land and claim it as their own after trading and creating a relationship with the Native Americans. Having communities learn about the history of Fredericksburg would also help bring others together because they are what makes up Fredericksburg now they are the people that own the land and that make up the population just like everyone that came before them.
